These women... family members...are tied together with 'enough rope to hang themselves'. It's about " family ties".... blood ties. It reflects how strong the role of family is in the American South, and in my own, certainly, as it symbolizes my relationship to my sister, who was fierce, passionate, loving, challenging and very much a mother to me when I was young. The black and white image of the two ladies that inspired this painting was from the forties.
