Three Faces, oil on canvas, 40" x 30", 2000-2002.

My first thoughts after I painted this was that these women are three parts of myself : the judgmental church lady self, the properly reared society girl, and, of course, my favorite irreverent redheaded personna who thumbs her nose at tradition and happily plays Eve. Interestingly, long after this painting was painted and named, I read a book about Jungian psychology and the ‘eternal aspect of the feminine’. Ironically, Nancy Corbett-Qualls talks about patriarchial culture’s view of women and says “from this view it appears the feminine has three faces -- she is mother, whore or virgin...and often a combination of all three.”
